Bluegreen Chromis
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
A shoal of five or more of these active swimmers adds flash and movement to any marine aquarium. Scott W. Michael
[edit] Overview
With luminescent, shimmering colors when well fed, and under good lighting, a shoal of these attractive, unaggressive fishes can add color and movement to the reef or fish-only tank.
Family: Pomacentridae
Other common name(s):
- Bluegreen Damselfish
Native range:
- Red Sea
- Marquesas Islands
- Tuamotus Islands
- Ryukyu Islands
- New Caledonia
Habitat: Shallow reef and lagoon areas above branching stony corals. Provide plenty of suitable hiding places.
Maximum length: 10 cm (4 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 114 L (30 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
General swimming level: Mid-level to surface.
[edit] Feeding
Omnivore. Feed a variety of meaty and algae-based foods at least twice a day. Color-enhancing foods can help it maintain its bright colors.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
This species will spend most of its time racing around in the upper areas of the aquarium. They provide the look of an authentic reef and can act as “dither fishes,” giving confidence to shy community members.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.
[edit] Notes
Unlike many damselfishes, this species can—and should—be housed in groups. It is usually not a threat to unrelated tankmates, but group members will form a pecking order, with subordinates often receiving an unequal share of mistreatment from their kin. If the chromis group is large enough (six individuals or more), the aggression will be spread out so that no one subordinate gets too much abuse. It is not a threat to invertebrates and may help corals by swimming among their branches, encouraging circulation within the coral colony.
