Yellowflanked Fairy Wrasse

A colorful and hardy wrasse for the reef aquarium. Scott W. Michael

[edit] Overview

Handsome and disease-resistant, this brightly pigmented fairy wrasse is a great addition to the reef aquarium. The more highly sought after males sport a yellow blotch on the side, hence the common name.

Family: Labridae

Other common name(s):

  • Blueheaded Fairy Wrasse
  • Blueside Wrasse
  • Blue-scaled Wrasse
  • Coralline Wrasse

Native range:

Habitat: In nature this species forms aggregations 1 to 2 m above coral or rocky bottoms along edges of lagoon, channel, and outer reef slopes.

Maximum length: 13 cm (5 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 209 L (55 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

[edit] Feeding

Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, pigment-enriched flake food, and Cyclop-eeze. Feed at least twice a day.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

It can be kept in harems in large aquariums, but it is advisable to introduce just one male per tank, except in very large systems. It may also quarrel with congeners (especially those that are similar in color). Although it often mixes with other fairy wrasses (Cirrhilabrus species) and flasher wrasses (Paracheilinus species) in the wild, it is likely to pick on the latter if space is limited.

[edit] Notes

This species is synomous with Cirrhilabrus lyukyuensis. Some sources believe them to be color morphs of the same species.
