Squarespot Anthias
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is a truly spectacular fish, best kept by aquarists with some experience and larger reef systems.
Family: Serranidae
Other common name(s):
- Squareblock Anthias
- Mirror Anthias
- Square-spot Fairy Basslet
Native range:
Maximum length: 20 cm (8 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 285 L (75 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, pigment-enriched flake food and Cyclop-eeze. Feed at least twice per day or preferably more often.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
Only one specimen should be kept per aquarium, unless the tank is large enough (135 gallons [513 L] or more); you can keep one male per tank with six or more females. This fish may also behave aggressively toward other zooplankton feeders, but it will not harm invertebrates.
[edit] Special Care
This anthias does best at lower light levels and needs plenty of swimming room. In a brightly lit tank, its color often fades.
[edit] Notes
Acclimation of this species is often slow. Individuals may hide for a week or more before they emerge from hiding. Juveniles and smaller females (under 3.9 in. [10 cm]) adjust more readily to aquarium confines.
