A stately, tall brackishwater fish from the shores of West Africa, where it is commonly found in mangrove swamps and areas where freshwater flows into the sea.

Native range:

Habitat: Found in brackishwater lagoons, estuaries, mangrove swamps, near coastal reefs. May enter freshwater, but is primarily a brackishwater/saltwater species.

Maximum length: 25 cm (10 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 684 L (181 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

General swimming level: Mid-level.

Omnivore, but feeds primarily on zooplankton in the wild. Offer meaty foods, along with herbivore rations.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

Peaceful, but larger specimens have been known to ingest small fish tankmates. Should be kept in schools of at least 3-5 fish. Safe with most reef aquarium invertebrates and corals.

Often sold from freshwater display tanks, but will only thrive in brackishwater or full-salinity saltwater. Newly purchased specimens can be acclimated from fresh to saltwater over a period of three days.

Pelagic eggs, pelagic larvae.
