Overview

Silvery, active fishes primarily found in coastal brackish waters, mangrove swamps, bays and inshore reefs. May enter freshwater streams, but do not thrive in freshwater aquariums.

Captive care: Need room to grow and swim. Brackishwater or full-strength saltwater. These are social fishes and must be kept in groups of three to five or more.

Feeding: Omnivores. Eat zooplankton, detritus, plant matter. Safe with corals and most reef aquarium organisms. Large specimens may eat small fishes.

Notes: Mostly sold as freshwater fishes, not in the marine section of fish stores, where they belong.
