[edit] Overview

This is a survivor species, a regal but rugged aquarium fish that typically does well in larger home systems. This fish exhibits great color transformations as it grows. Juveniles are dark overall with white and bright-blue lines, while adults have a curving band of bright scales and hot-blue highlights.

Family: Pomacanthidae

Other common name(s):

  • Semicircle Angelfish
  • Halfcircled Angelfish

Native range:

Habitat: Reef. Provide ample open swimming space and several bolt holes in which shelter is readily available.

Maximum length: 35 cm (14 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 513 L (136 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

General swimming level: All levels.

[edit] Feeding

Omnivore. Feed meaty and algae-based foods several times a day. Will benefit from occasional meals of sponge-containing angelfish rations.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

As a juvenile, it is relatively shy and will spend much of its time peering from a cave or crevice.

As it increases in size, so too will its bravado ramp up in proportion. Adults tend to be very confident and smart and make wonderful pets.

[edit] Breeding/Propagation

Egg scatterers that produce pelagic eggs, often in midwater mating rituals. Both eggs and larvae that drift with plankton in the water column and settle back onto a reef at about the time of metamorphosis. These are among the most challenging types of marine fishes to propagate in captivity.

[edit] Notes

Keep one per tank, as they will fight. Juveniles will battle with any other angels having similar coloration. It can be quite cantankerous in a smaller tank. For this reason, it is a good idea not to house it with mild-mannered fishes or at least add the angel to the tank last. It is less likely to harm its neighbors if housed in a larger tank provided with many hiding places. Like other sizable angels, it is a potential threat to corals, especially as it becomes larger.
