POMACANTHUS ANGELFISHES

These eyecatching members of the angelfish family can be kept in a very large reef tank, but it is a calculated risk.

They may nip large-polyped stony corals, certain soft corals (e.g., gorgonians, Xenia, Anthelia) and zoanthids. They will occasionally pick at and some will even eat small-polyped stony corals. It pays to remember that there is an inherent risk anytime you add a large angel to a tankful of stony corals.

They can be successfully kept with some soft corals, like Sinularia, Cladiella, Lemnalia, and Litophyton. Large individuals may occasionally pick at mushroom and sea anemones and are especially prone to bothering tridacnid clams. Adults may even eat sea stars.

Be aware that adult members of this genus are more likely to damage sessile invertebrates than juveniles are. Pomacanthus species are also less likely to do harm if well fed and kept in a larger tank. If you keep them in a reef tank, be sure to provide plenty of swimming room. They can be aggressive, but are usually not as feisty as the Holacanthus angels.
