Tomato Clownfish

A rugged, brightly colored fish, but a hellion in smaller tanks. Scott W. Michael

[edit] Overview

Sporting a red to reddish orange color scheme, this is a flashy and almost indestructible fish. Its durability is only matched by its potential pugnaciousness in smaller tanks.

Family: Pomacentridae

Other common name(s):

Native range:

Habitat: Reef. In nature, it lives in a sea anemone, but does not need a host to thrive in the aquarium. If an appropriate sea anemone is not present, it will find shelter in reef crevices or behind decor.

Maximum length: 14 cm (6 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 114 L (30 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

General swimming level: Near substrate.

[edit] Feeding

Omnivore. Feed meaty and vegetable foods at least twice a day. Color-enhancing foods can help maintain its bright colors.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

This gorgeous member of the clownfish guild may behave badly and be very territorial as an adult. While young fish may get along well with others (at least, unrelated species), adults may bite any fish that gets close to its host. Some individuals are less aggressive if a sea anemone is not present in the aquarium. Can be kept singly or in heterosexual pairs—the female is larger and usually darker in color than the male.

[edit] Special Care

The preferred host of this species is the Bubbletip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). It will swim in the water column, diving into a shelter when threatened. Tank-raised fish and anemones are the best choices. (Both are under heavy collection pressure in the wild, and captive-bred animals are the ethical choice and are much more likely to thrive in the aquarium.)

[edit] Breeding/Propagation

Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.
