Sailfin Blenny
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This comical, fascinating little fish is the perfect addition to the smaller tank. The large sail-like fin is raised in response to competing males or attractive females. In large community aquariums with competitive, boisterous tankmates, it is likely to hide constantly and not be able to get sufficient nourishment.
Family: Chaenopsidae
Other common name(s):
- Venezuelan Blenny
Native range:
- Tropical West Atlantic
- Cubagua Island
Habitat: Reef. Provide plenty of rocks with small holes (e.g., hard tubeworm tubes) that they can back into.
Maximum length: 5 cm (2 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 38 L (10 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
General swimming level: Near substrate.
[edit] Feeding
Carnivore. Feed meaty foods, at least once a day.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
The Sailfin Blenny and its kin spend most of their time with their heads peeking out of their “home” hole. They watch vigilantly for an appropriately sized food item to float past and then rapidly race out to pick it off.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.
[edit] Notes
This is a peaceful species that can be kept with many other small, passive fishes. Its small size makes it a potential snack to many fish-eating species (e.g., frogfishes, scorpionfishes, groupers, snappers); pick its neighbors very carefully. It may also be accosted by aggressive species like dottybacks and damselfishes. You can keep several, even in a smaller tank, as long as everyone has his or her own hole. It is a wonderful addition to the reef tank, although you may have difficulty finding it in a larger reef aquarium because of all the potential hiding holes.
