Rainford’s Goby
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
A favorite with many reef aquarists, this attractive little fish will not harm sessile invertebrates, and it really thrives if kept in a tank with filamentous algae. If the tank does not support an algal crop, this fish usually becomes emaciated.
Family: Gobiidae
Other common name(s):
- Old Glory
- Court Jester Goby
- Red-striped Goby
Native range:
Habitat: This goby inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms of turbid coastal reefs.
Maximum length: 6.5 cm (3 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 76 L (20 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Feed small crustaceans, like vitamin-enriched live and frozen brine shrimp and mysid shrimp, as well as prepared foods for herbivores. It will typically do best in a tank with some filamentous algae and live rock.
If placed in a tank without algae, feed at least twice a day. If lots of algae is present, feed every other day.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
With the exception of closely related species, it is rarely aggressively toward fish tankmates. Juveniles can be kept together in a medium-sized tank if introduced together, but adults often quarrel. Individuals are often erroneously sold as mated pairs. It is best to keep only one per tank.
It should be kept with peaceful species—avoid placing it in a tank with dottybacks, hawkfishes, larger damselfishes, and other bullies.
