Pacific Sea Fans

Requires dim light to thrive in captivity. Alf Nilsen (Bioquatic Photo-www.biophoto.net)

[edit] Overview

Deeper-water gorgonians; beige to pinkish orange, and yellow; may appear reddish due to a filmy red covering, perhaps of cyanobacteria. Mesh openings are elongate, typically about 0.5 to 1 in. wide, 2 to 3 in. long. Polyps red, orange, sometimes yellow. Must be securely fastened in place; require strong water currents of laminar flow. Do not place in areas of turbulent flow.

Family: Subergorgiidae

Other common name(s):

Native range:

Maximum height: 30 cm (12 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 380 L (100 gal)

Lighting: Need dim illumination. Bright illumination may lead to algal overgrowth.

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

[edit] Feeding

Nonzooxanthellate. Must be fed. Do best on small particulate foods such as enriched Artemia nauplii, dust-size pelleted foods, rotifers, or other foods that disperse to form fine particulate material in the water.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

Poor survival in captivity, probably due to insufficient or unsuitable foods and inappropriate lighting causing algal overgrowth.
