[edit] Overview

Its electric coloration, ready availability and price make this damselfish a staple in the marine aquarium world. It combines beauty and good personality, being one of the less aggressive members of this genus.

Family: Pomacentridae

Other common name(s):

  • Yellowtail Blue Damsel
  • Goldtail Demoiselle

Native range:

Habitat: Inhabits coral-rich areas of sheltered lagoon and inshore coral reefs. Occurs in small groups on Acropora patches.

Maximum length: 7 cm (3 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 38 L (10 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

[edit] Feeding

Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, pigment-enriched flake food, and Cyclop-eeze. Feed twice a day.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

It can be kept in small groups in a medium-sized tank with plenty of hiding places. A male-female pair can be kept in a smaller tank and will often spawn.

The Goldtail Demoiselle should not be kept with highly aggressive species, including more pugnacious damselfishes. This species is ideal for the reef aquarium, never harming desirable invertebrate tankmates and providing some algae-grazing services.
