Flame Angelfish
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This a distinctive and traffic-stopping species much in demand by marine aquarists. It was once considered a durable aquarium fish, but in recent years individuals have been proving more difficult to keep long-term, perhaps traceable to their region of origin.
Family: Pomacanthidae
Other common name(s):
- Flaming Angelfish
- Japanese Pygmy Angelfish
Native range:
- West Pacific
- South Pacific
- Central Pacific
Habitat: Found in clear lagoon and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone to a depth of 57 m. It is secretive and stays near shelter.
Maximum length: 10 cm (4 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 76 L (20 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Feed frozen preparations that contain Spirulina algae, as well as mysid shrimp and/or finely shaved fresh or frozen shrimp. Feed at least three times a day, unless in an aquarium that has healthy microalgae growth.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
It can be aggressive toward members of its own genus, as well as fishes with similar shape or behavior. If you plan to house it in a relatively peaceful community setting, it should be the last fish introduced. Like others in the genus, the Flame Angelfish may nip at large-polyped stony corals and tridacnid clam mantles. It may also eat some soft coral polyps and may nip at zoanthids.
