Rigidifolius
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
Slow-growing, unusual Aponogeton that requires no rest period. This plant grows on a rhizome much like that of Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus) as opposed to the tubers common to the genus. The leaves vary in color from reddish-brown to olive to bright green depending on the quality of lighting. New leaves tend to be reddish on the edges with the mature leaves turning brighter green. The leaf margins are gently rippled as well, which makes this a very attractive showpiece worthy of the extra attention required.
Family: Aponogetonaceae
Other common name(s):
Native range:
Habitat: Moving waters, both slow and fast, with sandy substrate.
Maximum height: 60 cm (24 in)
Lighting: Very bright light.
Placement: Background.
Water: Freshwater 23 °C (296 K, 73 °F) - 26 °C (299 K, 79 °F)
[edit] Overview
This is a challenging aquarium showpiece worthy of the extra attention required to keep it well.
[edit] Feeding
Requires heavy feeding and benefits from supplemental CO2.
[edit] Special Care
This is a plant that really needs good water circulation in the aquarium. Place it near the outflow of the filter or in the flowpath of a small powerhead. This is not to say that it should be battered by the current, but it does require moving water.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Vegetative propagation through rhizome division; seed.
[edit] Notes
Use a rich substrate of medium gravel mixed with sand. Place the rhizome just below the surface of the gravel.
