SLENDER SHRIMP GOBIES

This is a group for the enthusiast who seeks small, delicate, uncommon fishes. This genus of elongated shrimp gobies contains 11 described species and a number of undescribed forms. While they do not regularly make it into the aquarium trade, they are a welcome addition to a reef tank that duplicates a reef/sand flat interface.

They will not harm corals, and the smaller species are not a threat to crustaceans. The larger species, however, may eat delicate shrimps. They vary in size from 2.4 to 4.7 in. (6.1 to 12 cm).

Do not house them with aggressive species, especially benthic bullies (e.g., hawkfishes, sand perches). They may be evicted from their burrows by heftier shrimp gobies (like larger Amblyeleotris or Cryptocentrus species).

Keep only one Vanderhorstia species per tank, unless the aquarium is large (100 gallons or more). These fishes do not occur in colonies in the wild and usually maintain a greater inter-individual distance than many other shrimp gobies.

They are great jumpers that will “go airborne” if frightened. Like other shrimp gobies, they do best in a tank with a deep sand substrate.
