LAWNMOWER BLENNIES

Fishes in this genus are usually not dangerous to corals or clams, but an occasional individual may nip at a stony coral. These blennies will help control filamentous algae, rasping hard substrates with their comblike teeth.

They feed on filamentous algae, diatoms, foraminiferans, tiny crustaceans, detritus, and sand. They occasionally consume fish eggs, sponges, and small snails. Their feeding activities often stir up sediment, putting detritus into suspension where it can be removed by mechanical filters.

Keep only one Salarias species in a smaller tank. In a larger tank, you can house a pair (or possibly more, depending on the aquarium size). While territorial disputes may occur, if there is enough space the combatants can avoid one another. They occasionally attack other fishes. I have had them bite seahorses and try to nip the fins of herbivores.

They will consume frozen herbivore foods and may even eat flake food.
