MAROON ANEMONEFISH

This genus contains just one species, with a prominent spine on the cheek similar to many large angelfishes. There are two color variants—one has white markings, the other (so-called “golden” form) has yellowish bars.

It is one of the largest anemonefishes (maximum length 6.7 in. [17 cm]) and is highly sexually dimorphic (females can attain over 6 times the length of males). They readily acclimate and accept a wide array of aquarium fare.

Some wild-caught individuals will suffer from parasitic infections soon after they arrive, but they usually respond well to immediate treatment. The biggest drawback with this species is that it can become terribly aggressive. They should never be housed with other anemonefishes, and care should be exercised if you plan on keeping them with more peaceful fish species.

A large individual can wreak havoc in a small to medium-sized tank, especially in the presence of a host sea anemone. They can be kept in mated pairs, but the smaller males will be constantly chastised and should be provided with a Bubbletip Sea Anemone or other shelter for when the female is feeling feisty.
