PALETTE TANG

There is a single species in this surgeonfish genus: the electric-blue Palette or Pacific Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus). It is shy, especially when first introduced to the aquarium—provide it with branching corals or other suitable shelter.

Juveniles can be kept together, but adults will quarrel. It is not overly aggressive toward heterospecifics with the possible exception of close relatives.

This fish is very prone to skin parasites, which can be particularly difficult to deal with in a reef aquarium. It is also susceptible to lateral line and fin erosion. Quarantine this fish, and any surgeonfishes, for several weeks before placing it in your display tank.

The Palette Tang reaches a length of about 12 inches (30.5 cm) and should be kept in a tank of 100 gallons (380 L) or more. Juveniles often form groups over branching stony corals, in which they shelter.

They feed on algae as well as zooplankton. Offer it finely chopped fresh or frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and frozen preparations for herbivores.

Indian Ocean specimens sometimes have a yellow “belly.”
