SEAWEED BLENNIES

Only one member in this genus regularly makes it into the aquarium trade—the Seaweed Blenny (Parablennius marmoreus). This blenny feeds mainly on algae and detritus, although sponges, tunicates, bryozoans, tiny serpent stars, worms, and hydroids have also been taken from their stomachs (these may be ingested incidentally). While it does not usually feed on corals, it may occasionally nip at them.

Like most blennies, it needs a good source of plant material if is going to thrive in captivity. A tank with microalgae, as well as supplementary feeding with some algae-impregnated frozen foods, is imperative.

Also, like most of the blennies, this species can be rather aggressive toward other herbivores. Only one individual should be kept per small tank, and care should be taken when keeping it with other blennies. If you have a very large tank, aggression problems will be minimal.

The Seaweed Blenny attains a maximum length of 4.7 in. (12 cm).
