SMILING SHRIMP GOBY

This genus contains one wide-ranging species (it occurs from East Africa to the Society Islands) known as the Smiling or Flagfin Shrimp Goby. Although not common in the aquarium trade, it is a welcome addition to the passive reef community tank that has a substantial portion of the bottom devoted to sand.

It is a smaller species, attaining just 3.1 in. (7.8 cm). Adults are often observed in pairs. When they display at each other, they throw their large first dorsal fin forward and open their capacious mouths extremely wide.

Only one should be kept per tank, unless you can acquire a male-female pair. Even then, members of the opposite sex may fight in a tank without enough suitable shelter and/or space. Larger individuals may ingest smaller, more delicate shrimps.

A reef tank of 10 gallons (38 L) or more will suffice for a solitary individual. It is yellow, brown, or black overall. Mature males have a dorsal fin that is higher than that of the females.
