WHITECAP SHRIMP GOBY

The only species in this genus, the Whitecap Shrimp Goby (Lotilia graciliosa) is a handsome little fish that is always found with a large snapping shrimp known as Alpheus rubromaculatus. The partners usually live in sand patches on coral reefs and are not common anywhere.

Because of the shrimp’s size, it is likely to do some serious undermining of your tank’s reef structure. Be sure your live rock base is on the bottom of the tank before the sand is added. This shrimp will also do a good job of suspending some of the detritus and sediment collecting in the sand bed (this may disturb an aquarist fanatic about a clean tank, but it actually allows the detritus to be filtered out of the tank).

This shrimp goby is not likely to do as well in the aquarium without a shrimp. Although A. rubromaculatus is preferred, the fish may adopt a smaller shrimp species in captivity. This is one of the more docile shrimp gobies, so do not house it with aggressive tankmates.

Offer it foods like finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, and Cyclop-eeze (an excellent choice). A productive refugium will aid in its feeding.
