[edit] Overview

This a prized fish that can be housed in a reef tank if the aquarist is willing to feed it frequently (i.e., several times per day). It feeds mainly on zooplankton, although it may occasionally ingest benthic invertebrates, including soft coral polyps (in particular xeniid corals), especially if underfed.

Family: Chaetodontidae

Other common name(s):

  • Brushytoothed Butterflyfish
  • Shy Butterflyfish

Native range:

Habitat: Occur in large schools that may extend several meters above the edges of steep current-swept outer reef slopes.

Maximum length: 18 cm (7 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 380 L (100 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

[edit] Feeding

Feed meaty foods, like finely chopped seafood, mysid shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, frozen preparations, and flake food. Feed at least three times a day.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

It is more likely to acclimate to its new home if not pestered by its tankmates, although once it has fully adjusted to life in captivity, moderately aggressive fishes can be introduced. It can be kept singly, in pairs, or if your aquarium is large enough, in small groups.

[edit] Special Care

The optimal tank for the Pyramid Butterflyfish will have plenty of swimming space.

[edit] Notes

The captive longevity record for this species is 15 years.
