Domino Damsel

Juvenile Domino Damsel finds protective shelter near the tentacles of a Bulb-tipped Sea Anemone. Scott W. Michael

[edit] Overview

This fish is like a Doberman puppy—cute and cuddly, but potentially fearsome as it grows into an adult. They are indeed attractively marked and very durable, but often become unmanageable when they reach full size.

Family: Pomacentridae

Other common name(s):

  • Threespot Dascyllus
  • Domino Damselfish

Native range:

Habitat: Reef. Provide plenty of hiding places—prefers stony coral colonies, juveniles will also live in sea anemones.

Maximum length: 14 cm (6 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 209 L (55 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

[edit] Feeding

Omnivore. Feed meaty and vegetable foods two or more times a day.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

The juveniles make a very attractive display as they bob up and down above a coral head or other shelter. As they get larger, they spend more time in the water column. This is a fish that survives conditions that wipe out other species, and it can live for over 20 years in captivity.

[edit] Breeding/Propagation

Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.

[edit] Notes

Many aquarists are attracted to the perky little juveniles, but they can become very aggressive toward each other and other fishes as they grow. While juveniles can be kept with a wide range of tankmates, adolescents and adults will pick on small, more passive fish tankmates. It is not unusual for young fish to pair up as they reach sexual maturity (other Domino Damsels will be harassed by the “happy couple”).
