Blackmargin Fairy Wrasse

A rare beauty, similar to Cirrhilabrus scottorum. Mizutani Tomoshibi

[edit] Overview

This species is a rare find for reef aquarists, and it most closely resembles Scott’s Fairy Wrasse, with which it shares captive care requirements.

It differs from C. scottorum in having a slightly shorter snout and a more oblique angle to the mouth, and in lacking the anterior yellow color on the front of the head and red caudal fin. It gets its name from the black edging along the dorsal fin.

The Blackmargin Fairy Wrasse is the larger species, attaining a maximum length of about 15 cm (5.9 in.).

Unfortunately, it rarely enters the aquarium trade.

Family: Labridae

Other common name(s):

Native range:

Habitat: Coral reef, with rock caves and hiding places. In the wil, it occurs to a depth of 5 to 40 m (16 to 132 ft.).

Maximum length: 15 cm (6 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 208 L (55 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

General swimming level: Midwater to top.

[edit] Feeding

Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, pigment-enriched flake food, and Cyclop-eeze. Feed at least twice a day or preferably more often.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

Keep only one male per tank, and only attempt to keep a male with females in a large aquarium. The male’s color often fades if females are not present.

[edit] Special Care

Be sure to provide this wrasse with plenty of hiding places.

[edit] Notes

Color variations are common in this species, as in other Cirrhilabrus wrasses. See: Variations on a Fairy Wrasse Theme.
