Arothron manilensis, the Narrow-lined Puffer. David Burdick/NOAA

Overview

The puffers are primarily saltwater species, but some are found in brackish and freshwaters. The 12 freshwater species are from south Asia and the Congo River basin.

Puffers have strong, fused teeth and can be formidable tankmates for smaller fishes and invertebrates.

The viscera of some species carries tetrodotoxin, a potentially lethal poison responsible for more than a few deaths of Japanese sushi-eaters each year.
