Talbot's Demoiselle
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This lesser-known yellow-hued demoiselle is as attractive and sturdy as others in the genus, but is less aggressive than most of its kin.
Family: Pomacentridae
Other common name(s):
- Talbot's Damsel, Talbot's Damselfish
Native range:
Habitat: Reef. The more hiding places the better for this species. Abundant shelter enables this little fish to hide from potential threats and feel more secure.
Maximum length: 6.1 cm (2 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 38 L (10 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
General swimming level: Mid-level to bottom.
[edit] Feeding
Omnivore. Feed meaty and vegetable foods at least once a day. Color-enhancing foods can help maintain its bright colors.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
When it is not dashing about the tank, this demoiselle hovers over the substrate looking for passing food particles. The black spot at the base of its dorsal fin is known as an ocellus or false eye, and aids in confusing predators—their attacks are drawn away from the target’s head and real eyes and are instead directed at the ocellus.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.
[edit] Notes
Talbot’s Demoiselle is not a threat to most tankmates, as it tends to have a congenial disposition. It rarely bothers non-related tankmates and is more likely to be the recipient of aggression. More than one can be housed per tank. To increase the likelihood of success, add only small individuals, or one large fish and one or more smaller C. talboti. Bickering between group members is more likely to become a problem in a smaller tank. This is a wonderful choice for the reef aquarium.
