This genus of West African cichlids is mostly endemic to the Congo River. All have a distinctive fatty deposit on their brows as adults, leading to the common name "lumphead" cichlids. They are also rheophilious or rheophlic, meaning that they are found in the wild in fast-moving waters.
Two species that most often make their way into the aquarium trade are:
- Steatocranus casuarius Buffalo Cichlid
- Steatocranus tinanti Slender Humphead Cichlid
In total there are about 16 species, almost half of them still undescribed.
