[edit] Overview
In captivity, this handsome, butterflylike species is somewhat of an enigma; some individuals adapt quickly to aquarium life, while others hide constantly and never feed.
Family: Pomacanthidae
Other common name(s):
- Vermiculated Angelfish
- Emperor Butterflyfish
- Red Sea Butterflyfish
Native range:
Habitat: Inhabits continental shelf reefs; not usually found around oceanic islands.
Maximum length: 17 cm (7 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 209 L (55 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Offer frozen preparations that contain Spirulina algae, as well as mysid shrimp and/or finely shaved fresh or frozen shrimp. Feed at least three times a day, unless in an aquarium that has healthy microalgae growth. It will browse on filamentous algae and diatoms growing on the aquarium decor.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
By keeping it in an aquarium with lots of hiding places in a quiet area of your home (where there is not a lot of activity around the aquarium) and with nonaggressive tankmates, you will increase your chances of success with this species. A good crop of macroalgae (like Caulerpa) or microalgae may also facilitate acclimation. This species poses a moderate risk to large-polyped stony corals. It may also eat some soft coral polyps and nip at zoanthids and feather duster worms.
