Overview

A number of different, but related, cichlids are sold as Severums. To make matters more interesting, there are many color morphs and many color changes based on mood. They can be belligerent but are a good choice for a moderately rowdy cichlid community.

Family: Cichlidae

Other common name(s):

  • Banded Cichlid

Native range:

Habitat: Lives in still or slow-moving waters in the wild. The Severum prefers a tank with several flat stones and a cave or two. Plants are optional, although a cover of floating plants like water sprite or Salvinia spp., may offer them a quick “snack.”

Maximum length: 30 cm (12 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 209 L (55 gal)

Water: Freshwater 22 °C (72 °F) - 26 °C (79 °F)

General swimming level: Midwater to top.

Feeding

Omnivore. The Severum is a hearty eater that will accept a variety of foods. Its diet should include a variety of plant material (e.g., Romaine lettuce, spinach), in addition to regular prepared pelleted, frozen and live foods, such as bloodworms, earthworms and krill.

Aquarium Compatibility

Though shy, they are territorial and may become more aggressive during spawning. Pairing is difficult, and the presence of dither fishes may increase chances of pairing.

Breeding/Propagation

The Severum is a bi-parental, open spawner that sometimes chooses vertical surfaces in the manner of Angelfish. Forms strong pair bonds and is moderately difficult to breed.

Notes

Good filtration and regular water changes are a must.
