Schauinsland’s Sand Perch
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is one of the best sand perch species for the reef tank as it does not get as large many in its clan and is thus less of a threat to invertebrates.
Family: Pinguipedidiae
Other common name(s):
- Redspotted Sandperch
- Flagfin Weaver
- Rosy Sandsmelt
- Sand Perch
- Schauinsland's Sea Perch
Native range:
- East Africa
- Pitcairn Islands
- Japan
- Great Barrier Reef
- Oceania
Habitat: This species is usually found on open sand and rubble substrates near reefs.
Maximum length: 13 cm (5 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 76 L (20 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Meaty foods, including chopped seafood, mysid shrimp, and frozen preparations for carnivores. Feed every other day in the reef tank (once or twice a day in a tank without live substrate).
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
It is less aggressive toward fish tankmates than many of its congeners. It can become more of a bully as it gets larger. Even small specimens may harass other bottom-dwelling fishes introduced to the tank after the sand perch is established, especially in a smaller aquarium.
[edit] Notes
A small aggregation of these fish can be kept in a larger reef tank, but be sure to introduce all individuals to the aquarium simultaneously.
