Redspotted Hawkfish
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is a smaller hawkfish that is usually well-behaved in the reef aquarium. It is shy when first added to the tank, but once it has settled in it becomes bolder. This species will spend most of its time sitting in the open. It feeds mainly on zooplankton (including copepods and shrimp larvae) but does feed to a lesser degree on small shrimps, isopods, crabs, and polychaete worms.
Family: Cirrhitidae
Other common name(s):
- Grannyfish
Native range:
- Southern Florida
- Texas
- Bahamas
- Caribbean
- Brazil
- Eastern Atlantic
Habitat: Commonly found in rocky areas and among rubble, often in crevices and shallow caves.
Maximum length: 9.5 cm (4 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 76 L (20 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, pigment-enriched flake food, and Cyclop-eeze. Feed at least once a day, preferably twice.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
It may bully newly introduced tankmates in smaller tanks. This species can be kept in pairs in aquariums of 75 gallons (285 L) or more. Your chances of success will be greater if the two fish differ in size and they are added simultaneously.
[edit] Notes
The key to maintaining its brilliance is to offer a varied diet, including some color-enhancing foods.
