Redbanded Shrimp Goby
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is one of many gobies that forms a partnership with a snapping shrimp—a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship that can be amazing to watch in the home aquarium.
Family: Gobiidae
Other common name(s):
- Redbanded Shrimp Goby
Native range:
Habitat: Reef-sand interface, with a deep sand bed. It will usually reside in a burrow that its partner shrimp digs under rocks. If a shrimp is not present, it will hide in rock crevices near the tank bottom.
Maximum length: 7.9 cm (3 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 38 L (10 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
General swimming level: Bottom.
[edit] Feeding
Carnivore. Feed meaty foods at least once a day.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
The Redbanded Shrimp Goby will live in a burrow with a snapping shrimp (try to obtain the Tiger Snapping Shrimp, Alpheus bellulus). It serves as a lookout and hunter for the shrimp, which provides them both with a protective burrow. It will jump out of an open aquarium when harassed or if it cannot find a suitable hiding place.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.
[edit] Notes
This fish usually ignores its tankmates. Other small, benthic fish may be greeted with an open-mouth display if they try to invade its home, but otherwise, it is typically indifferent. It may quarrel with other shrimp gobies if hiding places are in short supply. It may be bullied by larger, more aggressive species (especially those that hang out on or near the aquarium bottom). Keep only one in a smaller tank (unless you can acquire a pair) or if you have a tank of 55 gallons or larger. It will not bother invertebrate tankmates.
