The freshwater angelfishes are among the most popular species kept by home aquarists. Three species are currently recognized:
- P. scalare Angelfish; formerly P. dumerilii and P. eimekei.
- P. altum Altum Angelfish.
- P. leopoldi Leopold's Angelfish, sometimes misidentified as P. dumerilii.
Additionally, there are many color forms of P. scalare and also hybrids resulting from crosses of P. scalare with other species. Hobbyists are urged to avoid keeping different Pterophyllum species together to prevent the proliferation of undesirable hybrids.
