Pacific Redstriped Hogfish
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
Once rare, this beautiful species is now readily available to reef aquarists. It will readily adapt to brightly lit reef aquariums even though it is normally found in deep water.
Family: Labridae
Other common name(s):
Native range:
Habitat: This is a deep-water species, found at depths of 20 and 50 m (66 to 165 feet) and is reported from depths greater than 60 m (200 feet).
Maximum length: 10 cm (4 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 76 L (20 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, and pigment-enriched flake food. Feed at least twice a day.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
It is generally safe in most reef systems, but larger individuals may become a threat to small bivalves and crustaceans. It has been kept with cleaner and pistol shrimps without a problem, but it was reported that a larger individual attacked a molting Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus). It may chase similarly shaped wrasses incessantly. Keep only one per tank as they are likely to quarrel.
[edit] Special Care
This hogfish is a great jumper, so the tank must be kept covered.
