A great aquarium catfish that will do best in a larger tank and with several members of its own species. Known as "squeakers" by local African peoples for the sounds they make when taken from the water.

Native range:

Habitat: Quiet bottoms of rivers, streams, and lakes. Has a territorial streak; provide large plants, driftwood, stone and the like to allow it a sense of place.

Maximum length: 19.5 cm (8 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 114 L (30 gal)

Water: Freshwater 23 °C (296 K, 73 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

General swimming level: Bottom.

Carnivore. In the wild, the Synodontis catfishes feed on mollusks, insects, insect larvae, and other meaty fare. Offer live and preserved worms, sinking flakes and pellets. Feed in the morning and at lights-out time at night.

A good fit with many types of community tank, as long as the inhabitants are not crowded.

Rarely bred in the aquarium.
