Lined Fairy Wrasse
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is a showcase fish, not inexpensive, and a spectacular addition to the reef aquarium.
Although the flamboyant males often ship poorly, once they acclimate, they usually do quite well in captivity. Juveniles and females will acclimate more readily than the more colorful males.
Compare to the even more rare Rhomboid Fairy Wrasse, C. rhomboidalis]]>
Family: Labridae
Other common name(s):
- Purplelined Wrasse
Native range:
- New Caledonia
- Loyalty Islands
- Great Barrier Reef
Habitat: In nature, this species inhabits clear outer reef slopes.
Maximum length: 11 cm (4 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 209 L (55 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
[edit] Feeding
Meaty foods, including finely shredded frozen seafood, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, pigment-enriched flake food, and Cyclop-eeze. Feed at least twice a day.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
It will not thrive with rambunctious and highly competitive tankmates, but will do fine with relatively mild-mannered reef fishes.
[edit] Special Care
The large males are very prone to jumping from an open tank, even when the cover is opened only during cleaning activities.
[edit] Notes
Acclimation is less likely to occur if it is harassed by resident tankmates or overzealous aquarists (leave the fish alone even if it hides constantly).
