Leopold's Angelfish
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is a smaller species of angelfish sometimes available as a wild import. Young specimens can appear to be small versions of the much more common P. scalare.
It is distinguished by a dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin between the second and third vertical bars. Its snout can also be distinctive, giving it the alternate common name: Roman-nosed Angelfish. See: Pterophyllum.
It is less assertive than other angelfish species Angelfish (P. scalare) and Altum Angelfish (P. altum).
Family: Cichlidae
Other common name(s):
- Long-nosed Angelfish
- Teardrop Angelfish
- Roman-nosed Angelfish
- Dwarf Angelfish
Native range:
Habitat: Angelfish prefer a high tank that is well planted around the sides and back. Sagittaria, Vallisneria, Amazon Swordplants, and driftwood are classic in the angelfish aquarium.
Maximum length: 5 cm (2 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 76 L (20 gal)
Water: Freshwater 25 °C (298 K, 77 °F) - 29 °C (302 K, 84 °F)
General swimming level: Midwater.
[edit] Feeding
Carnivore. Offer a variety of frozen and prepared foods. New specimens may be enticed to start eating by providing live adult Brine Shrimp (Artemia).
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
Do not mix with other angelfishes or other aggressive fishes. The best companions are Corydoras catfishes and peaceful tetras.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Forms monogamous pairs that always do best if kept in their own species tank. Angelfish deposit the eggs on a vertical surface in the aquarium, such as a plant leaf or the glass walls. Both the male and female tend the eggs and guard the fry for a time.
