Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides, Clown Sweetlips juvenile. Scott W. Michael

Overview

An important part of local food fisheries in many tropical areas, the grunts are large, inactive during the day and not particularly appealing to most aquarists. Juveniles are sometimes sold in the aquarium trade but are not considered good prospects for most home aquarists.

Two subfamilies:

  • Haemulinae (mostly New World grunts)
  • Plectorhynchinae (Indo-Pacific sweetlips and rubberlips)
