Overview

Although an eyecatcher when young, the Flagtail Prochilodus soon becomes a large, hyperactive fish that is definitely one of the best jumpers of all the tropical fishes. It can leave a typical community aquarium in ruins.

Habitat: Stream and riverbed with sunken driftwood, large stones and aquatic plants.

Maximum length: 27 cm (11 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 513 L (136 gal)

Water: Freshwater 22 °C (72 °F) - 26 °C (79 °F)

General swimming level: All levels.

Feeding

Omnivore. Will eat large quantities of herbivore foods and aquatic plants.

Aquarium Compatibility

Active swimmer that needs plenty of open water. Prone to jumping. Be sure aquarium has a sturdy cover.
