Doublesaddle Butterflyfish

Attractive and easy to keep, this butterfly makes a good addition to fish-only communities. Scott W. Michael

[edit] Overview

Sporting classic yellow, white and black butterflyfish attire, this durable species is a welcome addition to the fish-only tank. It resembles the attractive Falcula Butterflyfish (C. falcula).

Family: Chaetodontidae

Other common name(s):

  • Pacific Doublesaddle Butterflyfish
  • False Falcula Butterflyfish
  • Doublesaddle Butterfly

Native range:

Habitat: Reef or reef-sand interface. Provide plenty of swimming room for this fish.

Maximum length: 15 cm (6 in)

Minimum aquarium size: 285 L (75 gal)

Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)

General swimming level: All levels.

[edit] Feeding

Omnivore. Feed a varied diet of meaty and algae-based foods, at least three times a day.

[edit] Aquarium Compatibility

Like others in the family, it is an active fish that will spend most of its time in the open. If threatened, it will dash into a hole or crevice. They may be retiring when first introduced, but learn to recognize their keepers as a source of food and become bolder in time. Juveniles between 2 and 3.1 in. (5.1 and 7.9 cm) adjust most easily to aquarium life.

[edit] Breeding/Propagation

Egg scatterers that produce pelagic eggs, often in midwater mating rituals. Both eggs and larvae that drift with plankton in the water column and settle back onto a reef at about the time of metamorphosis. These are among the most challenging types of marine fishes to propagate in captivity.

[edit] Notes

Butterflyfishes are not generally aggressive, except with their own kind. It is prudent to keep only one Doublesaddle Butterflyfish per tank, unless you can acquire a known male-female pair. They will not only chase members of their own kind, but may also behave aggressively toward other species in the family that are similar in color. It feeds on a variety of invertebrates, including zoanthids, sea anemones, stony corals and soft-corals.
