Blackray Shrimp Goby
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
[edit] Overview
This is one of many gobies that forms a symbiotic partnership with a snapping shrimp (Alpheus sp.), and this relationship can be amazing to watch in the home aquarium. This handsome shrimp goby species will readily adapt to a peaceful community tank. Try to acquire both fish and its crustacean partner, which will dig a burrow that they share for protection.
Family: Gobiidae
Other common name(s):
- Highfin Shrimp Goby
- Filament-finned Prawn Goby
- Antenna Goby
Native range:
Habitat: Reef-sand interface. Provide some burrows or holes near the aquarium bottom where this fish can hide if not kept with its partner shrimp.
Maximum length: 5.1 cm (2 in)
Minimum aquarium size: 38 L (10 gal)
Water: Marine 24 °C (297 K, 75 °F) - 28 °C (301 K, 82 °F)
General swimming level: Bottom.
[edit] Feeding
Carnivore. Feed meaty fresh and frozen foods—which will be eaten by both fish and shrimp—at least once a day.
[edit] Aquarium Compatibility
This is a peace-loving goby that will not bother other fish species. You can keep more than one in the same tank, but be sure they have enough space to spread out, and that there are appropriate hiding places and/or shrimp for each individual. Its small size and passive disposition means it is often the target of more pugnacious species. It is not a threat to ornamental invertebrates.
[edit] Breeding/Propagation
Demersal (on or near the bottom) spawners that tend and protect their broods.
[edit] Notes
This shrimp goby spends more time hovering just over the substrate than most others in this guild. It often partners with the Tiger Snapping Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus) or Randall’s Snapping Shrimp (A. randalli). Keep in a covered tank.
