Baba Dioum is an environmentalist well-known for the following quotation, which comes from a speech he made in 1968 In New Delhi, India, to the general assembly of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
"In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught."
Baba Dioum was born in Dahra, Senegal in 1937. His primary concentration has been on African environmental issues in Africa, including agricultural policy and conservation of land and water.
