Alestiidae
From Microcosm Aquarium Explorer
Phenacogrammus interruptus, Congo Tetra. JJPhoto.dk
[edit] Overview
Once classified with the South American Characidae, these are African characin-type fishes. Included are the Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus), a popular aquarium species, and the African tigerfishes (Hydrocynus spp.), prized gamefishes.
Confusingly, this family has been moved by some ichthyologists to the new name Alestidae. Microcosm Aquarium Explorer will follow Nelson (2006) and continue to use Alestiidae.
